Riding on the 20…..43 Business of Hong Kong Design exhibition in Hangzhou, a crossover of two intermediaries – “DesignXcel” and “Next by D Twincities” enables three design graduates to reach out to a luxury scarf brand “嫵WOO” in Shanghai. They adapted their ideas into patterned silk scarfs. Joyce Chin (Advertising), Cheung Pak Wai (Graphics), and Carrie Yung (Interior) further developed their graphics of “mushmellow”, the floral patterns of “miss. B" and the colourful textured resin tiles to demonstrate how the diversified concepts could enrich the brand’s full scarf collection. The showcase illustrates the successful matching of design talents from Hong Kong and ta luxury brand on the mainland; and how the partnership can extend to the development of new products and business opportunities for young designers. The outcomes also demonstrate the importance of the support from influential intermediaries, and how such can foster knowledge exchange through strategic alignment between cities.

Not only does嫵WOO use traditional oriental culture, but it also combines fashion trends and international views, in order to express modern women's charm, confidence and elegance. By using precious material and exquisite handcraft, 嫵WOO creates a delicate lifestyle. The scarves are made of glossy silk satin and soft chiffon by digital printing. The hemming of scarves is handmade rolling. Stitches on the hemming are dense but tidy. The distance between two stitches is not more than 0.7cm, which make sure the hemming is clean and neat, not twisted. Even with the big size 80*213cm, the scarf is still looks beautiful.

Designers and business enterprises work together to create new objects, and designers will also have the opportunity to develop new ideas that are beyond their own practices. “The Five Elements” has fully demonstrated how the Hong Kong/Shenzhen/Suzhou based company, SCOPO Strategic Management, utilized its network and connection to set up platforms and work closely with designers in Hong Kong to provide design solutions for a wide range of clients. Fashion Design Eliza Yeung has utilized the collaboration to venture into creating fashionable product design.

Eliza is also the founder of the sportswear brand What L’s. She admires healthy living and the aesthetics of a balanced life.

Her design is inspired by the Five Elements in Chinese philosophy, which is the fundamental roots of the universe, between which interactions occur.

Aside from lighting things up, the reflection and refraction of light through different materials of the lamp bring calmness and comfort.

Eliza uses shapes - square, circle, and triangle in her design. The pattern of the Five Elements can be viewed from the bottom of the lamp. Different materials are used to form the patterns - the iron frame is ‘metal’, the wood chip is ‘wood’, glass is ‘water’, light is ‘fire’, and mirror means ‘earth’. Each face shows its distinctive texture and brightness.

List of designer(s)Jack Wang Head of POSH Design & Development

POSH, being one of the not many local businesses, has successfully revamped itself by orchestrating more than one type of innovation in the succession across generations. This showcase demonstrates the beauty of the collaborative challenges and highlights cross-cultural references of how design strategy leads a traditional company in Hong Kong to manufacture in the mainland and reach out to the global market while maintaining the reputation of an internationally renowned brand.

The design team explored the way paper moves, and they also took their cues from origami techniques, or the Japanese art of folding paper. For PDL the principles of origami inspired other applications, like keeping material used in the manufacturing process to a minimum and reducing the need for joints.

By bending and angling simple sheet metal into unique shapes and structures, the designers were able to develop a structure that is surprising strong and rigid. Grooves and cutouts helped to confer additional strength and solidity on this desk, allowing the different components of the table to fit together with ease.

The end result is a unique desking solution that is highly functional and less impactful on the environment.

List of designer(s)Dennis Chan

Created in 2004 by Dennis Chan, Qeelin is an international fine jewellery brand which takes inspiration and emotional resonance from Chinese symbolism. The brand creates exquisite jewellery intended for daily wear that is meaningful, contemporary, and universal.

Named after the Qilin, an auspicious Chinese mythical animal and icon of love, Qeelin fuses unbridled creativity with excellence in craftsmanship. It brings a touch of playful-ness and surprise into the world of fine jewellery.

The brand's iconic Wulu collection revisits the legendary Chinese gourd, an auspicious emblem in Chinese tradition.

Qeelin is part of the global Luxury group Kering, which develops an ensemble of luxury houses in fashion, leather goods, jewellery and watches, as well as sport & lifestyle brands.

Wulu

Qeelin’s signature Wulu collection is a perfect example of jewellery that is steeped in tradition while remaining perpetually fresh and fashionable. Wulu is inspired from the hulu fruit, which is shaped like a figure eight. Hulu has been revered in Chinese culture since ancient times as the fruit that gave birth to mankind, and it is believed by many to bring about good luck and ward off evil.

Bo Bo

Bo Bo originally was created to resemble a panda. The pendant featured white and black gold, adorned with black and white diamonds. “Bo Bo”, which means “precious” in Chinese, is also a symbol of peace. Eventually, versions of Bo Bo that look like the cuddly stuffed teddy bears so cherished in western culture were created.

Yu Yi

Yu Yi comes from ‘man si yu yi’ (万事如意), which translates as ‘may your dreams come true’. If you give someone a Yu Yi lock, you are giving that person a blessing. And a lock means so much more — to lock up love, promises, memories, health, friendship, and so on. This may be the most romantic Qeelin collection in a way.
